ABOUT JIM SCOTT

Born in Galax, Virginia, Jim was reared in Winchester, Va. where he attended Handley High School. He received a B.A. and an M.A. in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. 

After teaching at Edison High School in Fairfax County, and other public schools, Jim directed Fairfax County’s anti-poverty effort until 1969.

In 1971, he was elected to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, representing Providence District. He was re-elected in 1975, ‘79 and ’83. As a member of the Board he served as Chairman of the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission, Chairman of the Metropolitan Washington Water Resources Planning Board and  as President of the Virginia Association of Counties. In 1982, Jim received a master’s degree in Public Administration from George Mason University. In 1985, he received the Elizabeth and David Scull Award from the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments for his leadership on regional issues.

In 1986, Jim left the Board of Supervisors to become Director of Community Affairs of the Fairfax Hospital Association (now Inova Health System). 

In 1991, Jim was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates, representing the 53rd House District. The 53rd District covers all of the City of Falls Church and the Merrifield area, as well as parts of McLean. In the House, Jim serves on the Appropriations, Privileges and Elections and Militia, Police and Public Safety Committees. He has been recognized by the Virginia Housing Coalition, the Northern Virginia Technology Council, Leadership Fairfax, Volunteer Fairfax and the Greater Merrifield Business Association for his service and leadership.

Jim is married to the former Nancy Cromwell, who teaches English to speakers of other languages in the Fairfax County Public Schools. They have two daughters who are graduates of public schools in Fairfax County. The Scotts are members of Emmaus United Church of Christ.
